Calculators

Most of us carry a rough feeling about our time and rarely sit down to do the sums behind it. The calculators do those sums for you, in plain hours, whether the question is about someone you love, a habit that has stopped giving anything back or a goal with a date on it. What the answer means for your days is left to you, and the numbers are there to make that choice a little clearer.

Guides

  1. Count the time left with someone

Put a birthday, a lifespan and how often you are together into Leftover, and see the hours you may still share with a person or a pet.

  2. Add up what a habit has taken

Choose a stretch of the past, say how many hours a habit took, weigh what it gave back, and see the total in Wasted.

  3. See what a routine adds up to

Give Basic the time an activity takes a day or a week and a period to run it across, and see the total in hours, days and years.

  4. Lay out your day in 24 hours

Add a block for each part of your day in 24h, see how much is still free, and look at the same day as a chart.

  5. Work out what a goal asks of you

Tell Planning the hours a goal takes and the dates you have, and see what that asks of each day, week or month.

  6. Open, change or delete a calculation

Find a saved calculation in its list, change it and save it again, or delete one you no longer need.

  7. Bring a Leftover count up to date

Recalculate a saved Leftover count against today's date, one at a time or all at once, instead of entering it again.

  8. Start from a worked example

Open a calculator's helper, load one of its worked examples to see how the numbers fit together, then start your own.

  9. Weigh an estimate against your tracked time

Let Wasted balance your estimate against the daily average you have logged as wasted in Time Entry, and see how the total moves.

  10. Find out when a goal will be done

Tell Planning how many hours a goal takes and how much you can give it a day, and see the date it lands on.

  11. Count the hours a daily pace gives a goal

Give Planning the time you can spare each day and the dates you have, and see how many hours that puts into a goal.

Questions and answers

Why does Leftover ask for my own life expectancy?

Time together lasts only while both of you are alive, so Leftover counts up to whichever life is expected to end first. Your side comes from the default number on the Life Expectancy screen, and the other person's from the Birthday and Life expectancy (years) you type in.

Can I count the time I have left with a pet?

Yes. It is the same form, and all it needs is the animal's birthday and how long it is likely to live.

What do max, min and avg mean?

max is the total for the most time you put in, min for the least, and avg sits halfway between them. Without a minimum the result has a single number.

Why does the total grow so much with Days, and what is the NOTE under it?

With Days as the unit, every day you spend together counts as all 24 of its hours, so the totals run much higher, and the note says as much. For time you really share, Hours or Minutes give a truer picture.

What does "The person is expected to have passed away…" mean?

The birthday and the life expectancy you entered add up to a date that is already behind. Check both fields, since a typo in the year is the usual reason.

Does Leftover take sleep and work out of the hours?

No. The figure is the gross time across the days you overlap, so it is worth counting only the hours you actually spend together.

Can I see all the fields of a calculator at once?

Yes. The button with two arrows at the top of a calculator switches between the steps and a single page with every field and the result, and each calculator remembers which one you chose. 24h has no such button, because its whole day already sits on one screen.

Do I have to give a calculation a name?

You can tap Skip when the calculator asks at the start. Save asks again, and there a name is needed, because it is how the calculation shows up in its list.

What is the difference between Wasted and Basic?

Wasted looks back at a stretch of the past between two dates and lets you weigh those hours with factors such as how much you enjoyed them. Basic counts anything that repeats, over a round number of years or between two dates, and stops at the plain total, which makes it the one to reach for when the only question is how much. Add up what a habit has taken and See what a routine adds up to walk through each of them.

Do I have to fill in the factors of Wasted?

No. The whole third step can be skipped, and the result is then a plain count of hours. A factor you leave empty, or set to its middle level such as Neutral, does not move the total.

How do I take a factor off again?

Choose its middle level, Neutral for enjoyment, and the factor stops moving the total. In the steps, Clear under the list only closes it and keeps the level you chose, while on the single page it empties the factor.

Can one calculation add up several habits?

One calculation holds one habit. For a second one, start another calculation with the round + button, and both wait in Wasted calculations under the day you saved them.

Why can't I pick a date later than today in Wasted?

Wasted adds up time that has already gone, so both dates stop at today. For the years ahead, Basic can run the same habit across as many years as you choose.

What does Include my tracked time state do?

It takes the daily average of everything you have logged as wasted in Time Entry, stretches it across the dates of the calculation and sets each total halfway between that figure and your estimate.

Why did Include my tracked time state change nothing?

The calculator found no wasted time in your diary, and only entries on a wasted topic count toward the average. The average is read when the calculator opens, so an entry you add while it is open counts the next time you open it.

Should I turn on Include my tracked time state for a single habit?

Usually not. The average covers every wasted activity at once, so it pulls in hours that have nothing to do with the habit, and the result says more about your days in general than about the habit itself.

Does the filter of Time Entry change the tracked average?

No. The calculator counts all your wasted entries, whatever filter Time Entry has on at the moment.

Why does Basic ask for a time with Day and for hours with Week?

A day's share is easiest to read off a clock, such as 01:30, so Day opens the hour and minute wheels. A week holds more than a clock face shows, so Week takes a plain number of hours, up to 168. Switching Time unit for input clears the time you entered, which is why it pays to choose the unit first.

Can Basic count between exact dates, or into the future?

Yes. Calculate for specific date range on the second step swaps the period for a Start date and an End date, both days counted, and either of them can lie in the future, as far ahead as the end of 2199.

What does Sum up starting hours on a topic do?

It opens Basic in a window over the topic, for working out how many hours an activity took before you started logging it. The window has no name and no Save, and the total goes into Starting hours once you type it there yourself, as Add hours you spent before shows.

Why won't 24h take another block?

A day holds 24 hours, so a block longer than what total left shows is turned away with "That would take the day past 24 hours. Something already in it has to give first." Shorten or remove another block first and add the new one again, since the block window does not keep what you typed.

How do I change or remove a block in 24h?

Tap the block to change its name or time, or to remove it with the bin at the top of its window, which asks "Are you sure?" first. A swipe to the side removes a block at once, with no question.

Can 24h lay out a whole week?

24h holds one day at a time. For a week that is not the same every day, save a few days under their own names, such as a weekday and a Saturday, and they wait side by side in 24h calculations.

Which question should I choose in Planning?

It depends on what you already know. With the hours and the due date in hand, Quota tells you what each day, week or month asks. If you know the hours and how much you can give a day, Deadline finds the date it lands on, and with a daily pace and two dates, Total Time adds the hours up.

Why does Planning show a quota in hours and minutes?

A quota reads like a clock, so 05:30 means five and a half hours. The minutes are rounded up, which can add one to an uneven figure, and 5.77 hours shows as 05:47.

What does the warning about more hours than a week holds mean?

The dates are too close for the hours you gave, so the quota would need more than a day, a week or a month can hold. The result still shows, and moving End date further out or lowering the hours brings it back within reach.

Does Calculate weekly need fill in the goal of a topic?

No. It opens Planning in a window over the topic and works the number out, and the goal changes only once you type that number into it and tap Save on the topic.

From which day does Deadline count?

From today, the moment the calculation is opened, so a saved calculation shows later dates when you open it again a week on, while its row in the list keeps the dates of the day it was saved.

Why is max the later date in Deadline?

max comes from the most hours at the slower pace, so it is the latest the goal is likely to be done, and min comes from the fewest hours at the faster pace, the earliest. avg sits between the two.

How is Total Time different from Basic with dates?

Both spread a daily time across two dates, both days counted. Total Time keeps the question inside Planning, next to the other questions about a goal, while Basic also takes a weekly time or a round number of years, as See what a routine adds up to shows.

Where are my saved calculations?

Each calculator keeps its own list, which opens when you tap its card on the Calculators screen, and the round + at the bottom of that list starts a new calculation. The list is grouped by the day each calculation was last saved, the most recent day first.

Why did a calculation move up after I changed it?

The list is grouped by the day a calculation was last saved, so a change saved today moves it under today's date, above the ones you have not touched since.

Is a change kept if I leave without Save?

No. A change is kept only after Save and the Name window, and leaving the calculation with the back arrow drops it without a question.

Can I get a deleted calculation back?

No. The app asks "Are you sure?" before it deletes anything, and after Yes the calculation is gone from its list for good.

Why bring a saved Leftover count up to date?

Leftover counts the time you have left together from the day it was worked out, so a saved figure runs a little high with every day after it. An open count already shows today's figures, while its row in the list keeps the ones from the day it was saved until you recalculate it.

Does a recalculation use my new life expectancy?

Yes. It counts your side from your default life expectancy as it is now, so a changed number on the Life Expectancy screen shows up in every count you recalculate.

Where do I find the worked examples?

Behind the question mark at the top right of every calculator. The helper that opens has Select example with the examples of that calculator, and in Leftover it appears once your own life expectancy is set.

Why can't I save an example?

An example stays an example, and while it is on screen the calculator shows "This is example data" where Save would be. The red round arrow at the top clears it, and a calculation you fill in yourself can be saved as usual.

Why did the name of the example stay after I cleared it?

Clearing empties the fields and leaves the name, so a calculation of your own would be saved under the name of the example. Tap the name at the top to change it before you save.
