Time diary

Time Entry and Topic Manager keep a diary of where your hours go, sorted by topics you choose yourself. Each entry is only a duration, a topic and a day, and after a few weeks of them the averages show what your weeks are actually made of, which is often a little different from how they felt while you were living them.

Every topic sits on one of two sides, wasted or meaningful, depending on whether you would rather take that time back or have more of it, and the choice of side is entirely yours.

Guides

  1. Log your time

Write down your first entry in Time Entry: how long it took, which topic it belongs to and a short note, then see where that pace leads over ten years.

  2. Add a topic

Create a topic for an activity you want to keep an eye on, meaningful or wasted, with a name and a short note on what counts.

  3. See how a topic adds up

Open a topic to see every entry behind its total, add time right there, and read its averages, its consistency and where the current pace leads.

  4. Edit or delete an entry

Correct the duration, topic, date or note of a time entry, see what it did to your average in Log Details, and delete an entry you no longer need.

  5. Time an activity with a timer

Start a timer for a topic, pause it when you step away, and turn the finished session into a time entry rounded up to the whole minute.

  6. Sort and filter your entries

Flip Time Entry between newest and oldest first, narrow it to a topic, a period or a word in a description, and see what that slice adds up to.

  7. Set a goal for a topic

Give a meaningful topic a weekly quota and a number of active days, then see on Overview how your weeks compare with what you planned.

  8. Identify a wasted topic

Not sure whether an activity earns its hours? Answer a few yes-or-no questions about it, read where it lands and keep it as a Wasted topic if it belongs there.

  9. Change or delete a topic

Rename a topic, move it between wasted and meaningful time, clear its history or delete it, and see what each choice does to your entries.

  10. Add hours you spent before

Bring in the hours a topic took before you started logging: set the amount and the dates, choose how they spread, check the preview, then add them.

  11. Reorder your topics

Drag your meaningful and wasted topics into the order you want in the Wastime Topic Manager, and find the same order when you pick a topic to log time.

Questions and answers

How do I log meaningful time?

Switch Time Entry to Meaningful before you tap the round + button. An entry goes to the side that is open, and the form offers only the topics of that side. A topic that ended up on the wrong side can be converted later, together with all its entries.

Can one entry be longer than 23:55, or go on another day?

The wheels of Duration* stop at 23:55 and move in steps of five minutes, so a longer stretch goes in as two entries, while a timer keeps the exact minutes. Date* takes any earlier day and does not hold you back from a later one within the year.

Do I need an account or a network to log time?

No. Everything you log stays on your phone and goes into a backup like the rest of your data, as Back up your data shows.

What does "at this rate" at the top of Time Entry mean?

It takes your average a day since the first entry and stretches it over the next ten years on the wasted side, or over the next year on the meaningful one. Every calendar day since that first entry counts, the empty ones too, so the figure dips on a day you log nothing and rises again with the next entry, and an entry for an earlier day stretches the whole period. Wasted on the Calculators screen can weigh an estimate against the same average of your wasted time, as Weigh an estimate against your tracked time shows.

Why is the daily average lower than a usual session?

The total is divided by every calendar day from the first entry to today, the empty days included. A topic you give forty minutes every other day comes out at about twenty minutes a day, which is closer to what it really takes out of a week.

Why did no message show up after I saved an entry?

A first entry has nothing to be compared with, and on the meaningful side that holds for the first entry of every topic. After that, the message about your average comes only when the duration of an entry has changed, so a new date, topic or note passes quietly. It can also be switched off for good with Show statistics after each entry, under Account and then Settings in the menu on the home screen.

Can I stop the totals from counting up?

Yes, with Total hours animation under Account and then Settings in the menu on the home screen.

What does Log Details measure?

The difference one entry makes to your average a day, with the entry and without it, and what that difference comes to over ten years on the wasted side or over a year on the meaningful one. On the wasted side the average covers all your wasted time together, on the meaningful side only the topic of the entry, and in both cases it is spread over every calendar day since the first entry. The details are worked out from the saved entry, so a change you have not saved yet shows up in them after Save.

Why can't I edit some of my entries?

An entry that Starting hours added says "This is an auto-generated time entry and cannot be edited." when you open it. It can still be deleted with the bin, and the whole stretch changes when you open Starting hours on the topic's Manage tab again and tap Replace starting hours after a new preview.

Can I get a deleted topic or entry back?

Only by restoring a backup made before you deleted it, as Restore your data from a backup shows. A deleted entry is erased from the app at once, and so are a deleted topic and every entry in it, and its timer leaves Timers the next time you open that screen. There is no archive for topics, so one you simply stop using can stay in the list with its history intact.

Why is an entry missing from Time Entry?

Most likely a filter is on, and the filter button at the top of Time Entry shows it in red. An entry the filter leaves out is missing from the totals as well. The filter of each side stays in place, even after the app is closed, until Reset, Yes and Apply clear it, and it is not part of a backup.

How are the totals counted while a filter is on?

Only the entries that pass the filter count. The days in "days logged" run from the earliest of those entries to today, even when the period you picked ended long ago, and the average and the look ahead are worked out from these days.

Can I search my entries by the name of a topic?

The search in Filter looks only through the descriptions of the entries, whatever the case of the letters, so an entry without a description never turns up in it. A topic is picked in Topics instead, and several can be ticked at once.

Can I sort my entries by the date they were created?

Time Entry sorts only by the day an entry belongs to, newest or oldest first, and each side keeps its own order. The filter on the History tab of a topic can also group its entries by Created Date or Updated Date, under Group by.

Can two timers run at the same time?

Only one runs at a time. Starting another timer pauses the one that was running and keeps its time, and a running timer goes on counting when you leave Timers or close the app.

Why did a timed entry get a minute more than the timer showed?

The length of a timed session is rounded up to whole minutes, so 24 minutes and 37 seconds become 00:25, and Edit timer time says so under Duration*. The breaks you took with the pause button do not count, and Pauses in the timer lists them.

What happens to a timer session I closed without saving?

It waits in the results of that timer, behind the button with stacked layers at the top of the timer, which turns red while something is left unsaved. Tapping the session there saves it as an entry, and a swipe lets you mark it as done without an entry, continue it or delete it.

What if a timer runs very long or past midnight?

After 12 hours the app asks whether to save the session as one entry or split it into smaller parts, and a session longer than 23:59 can only be split, into parts of up to 12:00. A session that crossed midnight gets the date of the day you tapped Complete, which you can still change before saving.

What is the difference between a wasted and a meaningful topic?

The difference lies in what you mean by the topic. Entries work the same way on both sides, and a topic goes on the side you choose when you add it. If you change your mind later, Show advanced options on the topic's Manage tab moves it to the other side together with all its entries, as Change or delete a topic shows.

Can two topics have the same name?

The app warns you with "Topic with this name already exists." and still saves the second topic. It only checks the side you are adding to, so the same name on the wasted and the meaningful side goes through without a warning. The questions behind identify the wasted topics do not check names at all and create the second topic without a word.

Why are there no totals in the list of topics?

The list in Topic manager keeps to names. Tap a topic to see its total at the top, every entry under History and its averages under Overview, as See how a topic adds up shows.

Does renaming a topic change my old entries?

Yes. Entries point to their topic and keep no copy of its name, so every past entry shows the new name as soon as you save it. A timer of the topic picks the new name up the next time you open Timers.

What moves when I convert a topic to the other side?

The topic and all of its entries, the Starting hours among them, so their hours leave one side of Time Entry and Statistics and join the other. A single entry cannot change sides on its own. A quota, active days or a deadline stay with the topic, and while it is wasted they are simply out of sight until it is converted back.

What does Clear history activities remove?

Every entry of the topic, the ones from a timer and from Starting hours included, and Starting hours goes back to "Not set". The name, the note and the goals stay, and the row cannot be tapped while the topic has no entries.

Does the order of topics carry over to Timers?

The order you set in Topic Manager shows there, in the field Topic* of Log time and in the topics of the Time Entry filter. Timers keeps an order of its own, which follows the topics only when the screen first opens and is changed with its own button at the top.

Where does a new or converted topic end up in the list?

A new topic joins the end of its side, however it was created. A converted topic keeps its place number, so one moved from the wasted side lands at the top of the meaningful list, and one moved the other way lands at the bottom of the wasted list. There is no sorting by name, and the order you set is part of a backup.

What do the weekly and monthly averages mean?

They are the daily average multiplied by seven and by about thirty and a half. A real week or month can hold more or less than that, and these figures spread the difference evenly over the whole time since the first entry.

How is activity consistency counted?

It is the share of days with at least one entry among all the days since the first entry, today included, so 13 active days out of 29 make 45%. A meaningful topic can also be measured against a number of active days you plan per week or month, which you set on its Manage tab.

Why does a wasted topic show fewer cards on Overview?

The cards for time goals and the deadline belong to meaningful topics, since only they can carry a quota or a deadline. A wasted topic shows its averages and how regular it has been, two cards in all.

Where do I set a quota or a deadline for a topic?

The form for a new topic asks only for a name and a note, and the rest waits on the topic's Manage tab. Open the topic from the list in Topic manager and switch to Manage, where a meaningful topic offers Add a quota for this topic, Count how often, not just how long and Hit this by a specific date, as Set a goal for a topic shows.

How does the app count a week for a goal?

A week runs from Monday to Sunday and a month is a calendar month. Only finished weeks count towards the percentage, and the week you are in shows apart as a line like "0 of 4 this week", so a quiet Monday does not pull the number down. Until the first full week with entries is over, the card says "consistency starts once your first full week is done".

Why is my consistency below 100% when I came back every week?

Each finished week is measured against the number of days you set, and it counts for no more than that, so a week with five sessions does not make up for one with two. A week without a single entry counts as zero.

What does the deadline of a topic show?

How much of the calendar time between Start date* and Deadline* has already passed and how many days are left, while the hours of the topic play no part in it. Once the deadline is behind you, Save stays grey for any change to the topic until you move the deadline or untick Hit this by a specific date.

How do I change or remove a goal?

Change the numbers on the topic's Manage tab or untick the card of the goal, then tap Save, and the cards on Overview follow the next time you open the topic. A weekly or monthly quota is a plain number of hours, so 40 hours a week is Weekly with 40 in Hours*, and hours and minutes are kept for Daily. The calculator behind Calculate weekly need only works a number out, as Work out what a goal asks of you shows, and you type the result into the field yourself.

How do I work out how many starting hours to add?

Sum up starting hours, under the Starting hours row of the topic's Manage tab, opens Basic in a window over the topic. Give it the time the activity took a day or a week and how long you kept it up, and type the total it shows into Starting hours yourself, as See what a routine adds up to shows for the calculator.

Will starting hours touch the entries I logged myself?

No. Replace starting hours and Remove starting hours change only the entries the window added, and the ones you logged by hand or with a timer stay as they were. Clear history activities on the same tab works differently and removes every entry of the topic.

Is what Add these hours writes the same as the preview?

Yes, Add these hours writes exactly the entries of the preview. With Even the same settings always give the same entries, while Varied picks the days and the amounts anew, and Another layout shows a different arrangement of the same request before you add it. One go takes up to 10000 hours, and a single day holds at most 16.

Why is the average on Overview lower than in the preview of starting hours?

The preview divides the hours by the days that get time, while Overview divides them by every day from the first entry to today, the weekends and the weeks after the range included.

Do I have to create a topic after answering the questions?

No. Finish closes the result without creating anything, and a topic appears only when you tap Create. When the result finds that the activity sits about where it should, Create waits behind I would like to create anyway, so you can still keep an eye on it if you want to.

Can the questions about an activity give me a meaningful topic?

They only ever create a wasted one. A meaningful topic comes from the round + button on the Meaningful side of Topic Manager, and a topic that ended up on the wrong side can be moved later on its Manage tab, as Change or delete a topic shows.

Are my answers to the questions saved anywhere?

No. The topic gets the activity's name and nothing else, and the answers are gone once you leave the questions. A single answer cannot be taken back either, though the round arrow at the top right and Restart start again from the first question. There are eight questions in all, and depending on your answers you see three or four of them.

Can I see what a habit took before I started logging it?

Time Entry knows only the hours you log and the starting hours you add to a topic. For a rough figure without any entries, Wasted on the Calculators screen adds up a stretch of the past you choose, as Add up what a habit has taken shows, and Add hours you spent before brings such hours into the topic itself.

What is the card that appears at the bottom of Topic Manager?

It is a one-time hint that shows up after about ten seconds on the screen, for as long as the help window has never been opened. The cross hides it until your next visit, and How it works opens Topic Manager Helper and switches the hint off for good, along with the red pulse on the question mark button.
